Masseur / Masseuse
A Masseur or Masseuse in a health club performs massage and other techniques to
provide physical and mental relaxation to guests. As a Masseur or Masseuse you'll
apply alcohol, oils or other rubbing compounds to a guest's skin, then knead and
rub the body with carefully regulated pressure to penetrate and relax areas of tension
or spasm in the musculature (known as 'knots'). You may also apply a range of other
massage techniques, ranging from hot stone methods through acupressure and acupuncture
to reflexology and many more.
Massage therapy is currently an unregulated discipline. However, to work as a Masseur
or Masseuse you should undertake an in-depth training course of at least six months
full-time or 12 months part-time. You should have a thorough understanding of anatomy
and physiology, whole body massage, health and safety and business, professional
and ethical standards. A professional and caring attitude towards your clients is
a very important attribute.
