Duty Manager roles in health clubs and leisure centres are seen as the first rung
on the ladder of management positions. As a Duty Manager you'll take responsibility
for a portion of the centre's facilities during a shift, a portfolio that may also
include managing health and safety, managing staff, customer care and operations.
The Duty Manager reports directly to the facility manager or, in a large establishment,
to an assistant manager.
Qualifications or certifications aren't generally required for a Duty Manager, but
prior experience of work in the leisure or health industry is often invaluable.
You'll need to be highly motivated with good people skills, a calm head under pressure
and the ambition to learn from those around you and above you in the management
hierarchy so that you can progress.
